I've been using Common Sense Media for several years. It's excellent, aligned with the NETS-S from ISTE, and being used all across the globe. The lessons are designed to be stand alone, but I propose we take this one step further. How are teachers using these concepts throughout their curriculum? Are all teachers aware of what students know when they come into their class?
Recently at my elementary school, the technology integrators have been working with classroom teachers and specials/specialists with the Common Sense Media Scope and Sequence and we've chosen 5 lessons per grade beginning at kindergarten and continuing through 4th grade. Teachers will teach these with fidelity this year, learn the concepts they'll be teaching, and reinforce them the rest of the year. Next year we hope to work with them on embedding them within their content where it makes the most sense. Specials/Specialists also met with us to review the concepts taught at each grade so that they can promote digital citizenship in their classes. We hope to create a strong digital citizenship program where all staff are modeling and promoting positive use of technology.
